Overstimulated as a Mom? Here’s How To Find Your Calm

Hey Empowered Moms! 💪🌟
In our busy lives, we are constantly bombarded with sensory overwhelm. Juggling multiple responsibilities, endless to-do lists, being needed constantly and constant noise can take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. You’re not a bad mom when you feel irritable. In fact, it’s just a sign of overstimulation and you need a break.
We naturally respond to overstimulation (fight or flight, rage, disassociation), but there are things we can do to limit the sensory overload and things to do when it’s already hit you like a ton of bricks.
Here are some dangers of overstimulation and tips to overcome it:
The Dangers:
- Burnout: Constant overstimulation can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, making it difficult to enjoy motherhood.
- Irritability: Overstimulation often results in irritability, impacting our relationships with our kids and loved ones.
- Decreased Productivity: A cluttered mind struggles to focus, leading to decreased efficiency in daily tasks.
Poor Decision-Making: When overwhelmed, our ability to make clear, rational decisions diminishes. - Health Issues: Chronic stress from overstimulation can lead to headaches, insomnia, and other health problems.
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize tasks. It’s okay to decline commitments that add unnecessary stress.
- Create a Calm Space: Designate a quiet area in your home where you can retreat for a few minutes of peace each day. Take those minutes as seriously as you take feeding your kids. You need to reset.
- Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help center your mind. Cultivate a mindset of gratitude by reflecting on the positive aspects of motherhood
- Digital Detox: Limit screen time and take breaks from social media to reduce information overload. Continuous scrolling causes anxiety and depression. Focus on real life connections.
- Self-Care Routine: Make time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading, taking a bath, or enjoying a hobby. Enjoy a quiet coffee outside without kids, put on a face mask and lock yourself in the bathroom with wine and dark chocolates for 10 minutes.
- Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors to recharge and gain a fresh perspective. Our bodies need fresh outdoor air. And connecting with nature is proven to better our mood and decrease stress.
- Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family, friends, or professional counselors. These important people love you, and they are overjoyed to help you through this season. Most of us have been there, we get it. And we are happy to make sure another mama is not struggling alone.
Remember, taking care of yourself is essential for being the best mom you can be. By managing overstimulation, you’ll create a more balanced, peaceful life for you and your family.
