Get off the Hot Mess Express: A Mom’s Guide to Finding Calm

Let’s face it, mama—we’ve all been there. You catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think, “Who is that crazy woman staring back at me?” The house is a mess, your to-do list feels like it’s a mile long, and your phone is buzzing with endless notifications. You’re rushing from one thing to the next, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to get ahead. By the end of the day, you’re exhausted, unfulfilled, and wondering where all those precious hours went.

You’re on the Hot Mess Express, and it’s time to get off.

START WITH YOU

To avoid these chaotic days, I’ve learned to wake up before the kids—even if it’s just 10 minutes earlier. I know it’s tough, especially when you have little ones, but trust me, those few minutes of peace can make all the difference. During this time, I savor my coffee while it’s still hot, not while multitasking, but quietly and mindfully. I’ll read a few pages of a book, step outside to breathe in the fresh air, and center myself for the day ahead. Starting your day with intention, instead of reaction, is like putting on your armor—you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

As author and former First Lady Michelle Obama once said, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.” This simple practice of self-care in the morning helps me to fill my own cup so I can pour into my family throughout the day.

RECONNECTING

Once the day begins, I sometimes get lost in the chaos of life again. When this happens, I remind myself to slow down and pay attention to my five senses. I’ll take the time to soak in the soft, cool touch of the green grass on a summer day, a warm embrace from my husband, or even smile at the sound of the washer that never seems to stop. When my mind is activated to these everyday experiences and blessings, it helps me to appreciate the simple joys of life.

As Oprah Winfrey wisely said, “Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.” That’s it, you don’t get this day with your kids back. Embracing the present helps you to reconnect with what truly matters, allowing you to move through the day with more grace and gratitude.

REENERGIZE

When you’re constantly rushing, you miss out on so much of the goodness around you. Taking time in the early morning to nourish your mind, heart, and soul in the peace and quiet will truly change your life. You’ll find that your days are more efficient, your energy is vibrant, and your mind is clear.

One more tip: Don’t underestimate the power of a midday reset. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a quick break. Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, a short walk around the block, or even a quick dance party with your kids, these little moments can reenergize you and help you push through the rest of the day with a lighter spirit.

EMBRACING THE IMPERFECTIONS

Remember, gorgeous, it’s okay to have those Hot Mess days. They don’t define you—they’re just part of the journey. What matters is how you respond to them. By taking a few simple steps to start your day off right, reconnect with the present moment, and reenergize when needed, you can transform even the most chaotic days into something meaningful.

Motherhood is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s okay to stumble along the way. Every day won’t be perfect, and that’s perfectly fine. Just show up, do your best, and remember that you’re not alone on this journey. As you navigate the ups and downs, keep these words from Michelle Obama close to your heart: “Being a mom isn’t easy. But it is the best job anyone could ever have.”

So take a deep breath, dust yourself off, and get back on track. You’ve got this, mama. And when you’re feeling overwhelmed, just remember—there’s always tomorrow to start fresh. Your strength, love, and resilience are what make you an incredible mom. And no matter how messy life gets, you’re doing an amazing job. Keep going, keep growing, and embrace the beautiful, messy journey of motherhood.

xo, Jenn
